Sole Mole

(Moles are like secrets; everyone has them!)

red is the mole on my left foot so
it is quite small but visible though
between the heel and a calloused toe
for forty-four years it seems to grow.

and yet, no one ever seems to know
because this mole would not itself show
often so covered by sock and shoe
and now, this secret is known to you.

(a secret is
something hidden
something forbidden
something that makes you unforgiven.

a secret is something unusual ---
the unknown among the knowns
the groan among the moans
the drone among the tones.)


a secret is an in-between:
between you and me
between sigh and cry
between amity and enmity
between friend and foe

between heel and toe.
