Sing the Sweetest Tune

(for Ben G., upon marital separation)

embattled pal, how shall I comfort you?
true friend in darkest hour of trial torn
condemned outcast of shattered heart so blue
(emotions numb) uplift your soul forlorn

tempt not your fate but stand firm on your ground
endear your hope to one who loves you so
better rejoice and move on (life goes ‘round)
then sing the sweetest tune, in proud echo!

The allure of “whirlwind” marriage is a mirage,
an illusion; like color photograph that fades so soon.
Yes, it is only true love that pervades and lasts:
pure romance endures in Time like photograph in sepia,
classic, unfading, unchanging…

- between
flawed marriage and gnawed union
is thawed romance.
